Why Water for Plants is Important?

Water is crucial to all forms of life, even the most hardy desert plants need water. Do you know how water plays an important role for plants? Water helps in the germination of seeds. It helps in the process of photosynthesis by which plants prepare their food. Water maintain the plant structure by providing the appropriate pressure to the plant tissues. Water is an excellent solvent, it also acts as a reagent in various reactions in plant cells. During the metabolism reactions, the inner temperature of the plant rises and the water stream flowing throughout the plant body acts as a coolant and maintains the temperature. Plants take their nutrients from soil only in soluble  form therefore soil water is essential for the survival of the plants.

                              So without the proper balance of water, the plant not only is malnourished but it is also physically weak and can’t support its own weight.  But, if a plant’s soil has too much water, the roots can rot, decreases a plants ability to take up water from its roots and plant cannot get enough oxygen from the soil . A plant can’t grow if it doesn’t have healthy roots, so the proper balance of water is important whenplants are growing , as well growth and maintenance of root systems require large quantities of oxygen for respiration . When oxygen content drops below 10% root growth of most plants will be limited . Oxygen deficiency appears to be the most important environmental factor causing stress, reduced growth, injury and death to trees and other plants .   But if soil doesn’t have enough water then soil gets wilted, the permanent wilting point is the point when there is no water available to the plant. The most well-known cause of wilting in plants, is a lack of water.  A dry environment will pull moisture out of the plant and insufficient water will prevent nutrients from reaching the ends of the plant. Wilting diminishes the plant's ability to transpire and grow. Permanent wilting leads to plant death. So maintaining water level is very important to save plants .

Soil moisture is the water held in the spaces between soil particles. It is the water stored in the soil and is affected by temperature , soil characteristics and more. As moisture availability declines , the normal function and growth of plants are disrupted and crop yields are reduced and as our climate changes , moisture availability is becoming more variable.
